Why does Insomnia happen?

Whilst there can be other factors involved such as anxiety over other unresolved life stresses, insomnia usually expresses itself is as follows:

Past inability to sleep caused by excessive worry, change in sleep patterns or other factors



Present anxiety that inability to sleep will occur again. Concerns about future consequences of lack of sleep.



Results in 'trying' to sleep or get back to sleep, while worrying that you won't, which maintains a vicious cycle 



Because the above pattern is kept going by anxiety about past, present and future sleep or general anxieties from day to day life, the most direct answer to dealing with it is dealing with that anxiety so that it no longer plagues your life. The cycle then stops, resulting in a good nights sleep.
